What Happened?

Even though I was the one
Who discontinued writing
Still
I wish I knew
What happened
To my deaf friend Ivonne Mquadi

I Googled her the other day

The engine didn’t yield
Instead it helpfully suggested
That it may be wiser
If I search for something else

I hadn’t thought of her at all
The last ten years
Why
All of a sudden
Now
She comes on striding
With her soft unfastened shoes
Walking though my mind
As though crossing our old campus
To come to class
Where I
Her notetaker
Would write
What the professor said
In larger letters
For her departing eyes

Year 1991. My Friend Speaks to My Ex-Husband

We are getting together tonight
With our poetry group

Come

You will enjoy it

Besides

We have a special gift for you –
A new girl
Beautiful as a snowdrop
Pure as old water

We will give her to you
As your wife
If you want her
